Beginner on a budget

Just began my growing journey and ya boi is on a budget. Will this be ok? Lol, it’s a clear grow tent with aluminum foil tape slapped all around. Have a 600w led grow light and a fan running inside 24/7.Preformatted text

Hi @billbio , welcome to the community. Many people find they can only post pictures through the website. See here: How do i post pictures or here: How to add photo . Hope to see some pictures soon. We love pictures!!

Got it. Thank you. So, more insight:

I was given this plant recently and it was just a seed thrown in some miracle grow basically. I have more seeds and fox farm ocean soil coming in to use next. Question is, is this setup going to be ok? And is it worth it to transfer this plant when I get the soil? (Ignore the little lava rock heater at the bottom.)

I am not an experienced grower by any stretch of the imagination but has this plant been defoliated all the way down the main stem? Or is it very stretched out? Has the light been in the same place since it sprouted?

I was gifted this plant. It used to be outside in the same pot with miracle grow potting soil. The leaves have fallen off except the very top for the most part. I now have it in this tent. I literally just finished transferring to Fox farms ocean forest soil and I’m not sure what else to do to keep it from just failing. It’s not looking too good. It’s now under a 600w led light. A “wakyme” light from Amazon.

That plant has stretch too much. What is the light distance?

Currently sits a little more than a foot from the top of the plant. I tried to post a pic showing how far it is. I just threw this plant into the tent yesterday from sitting outdoors.

I think the set up will be ok to grow a plant. I did my first grow on a bookshelf with a much less powerful light then what you are using. You might not reap a optimal harvest but it is enough to get you started and determine whether you will like this new pastime. Spoiler… you will. I’m having a problem with the mystery surrounding this current plant. It seems strange to me that it was outside and it lost all it’s lower leaves. I thought is was stretched which usually happens when it is indoors and the light is too far away. Being outside, even on a cloudy day, it would have received plenty of light. And the most current pictures the leaves are drooping drastically. If it wasn’t getting enough light, I believe the leaves would be clawing upward in an attempt to get light. The drooping is usually a sign of being under or over watered. How often are you watering? Are you adjusting the PH of the water? If that is a PH meter in the soil, what is the PH reading?

It rained a lot overnight and all day for a couple days and I caught it a bit late and had it inside for that time. It was over watered, for sure. The pH meter says about 3 and I just got in some pH up and down. But don’t feel like I can really use it yet being tho it was over watered, assuming you adjust the pH of the water you use to water it to around 7ish and that’s how you bring the pH up?

Well that explains the droop. Yeah, if your meter is accurate, your ph is very low. Down the road you will want to buy a good ph meter. I bought a meter like the one you have and it had the ability to measure the moisture in the soil. When I tested it by placing it in a glass of water and it came back with a reading of only 6 out of a possible 10, I took it back to the store. I ended up buying one of those ph drop test kits. Going to use that until it’s finished and then buy a decent meter. At this point, I raise my ph with baking soda and lower it with vinegar. Not the most sophisticated method but its worked for me so far. I have never used a ppm meter as once my plants are in their final container I never watered enough to get run off. So I had nothing to test. Someone more experienced is going to have to weigh in on how to adjust your ph at the root from 3 to the 6.5 to 7 that you want. I have done some research online and have never found anything on how to do it without using a ph meter to test the run off. I would think that you would have to adjust your water to something higher than what you want your final number to be to compromise for the high acidity of your current reading. Hopefully one of the grow gurus on this app will help us both out on that. In the meantime, not watering until the top couple inches of your soil is dry is a good idea. Hope she bounces back. Good luck.

Yeah I’m not very hopeful but it would be neat lol. Thank you again

Upon further review, I’ve realized I was looking in the wrong spot for the pH. The pH is ACTUALLY sitting at about 6.5!

That sounds better. I thought it seemed very low for Fox Farms soil. Never used it but it is said to be a good product. So if you can adjust your water to 6.5 - 7 you should be golden. Maybe once she is healthy you could clone her by chopping off the top growth and seeing if she will root. Then you can start over in the tent under the light and try to keep her from stretching/losing her leaves. You’ve lost so much potential in the bottom 75% of the plant. I can’t promise that it will work but might be worth thinking about.

I’ve been meaning to look up how to clone. Thank you so much! I’m definitely going to try that depending on how this looks in a weekish. You’ve been a great help. Thank you

Not a problem. So many people have helped me on this app it’s nice to get to the point where I have a bit of experience that I can pass on.

Take a look at @canagen 's post on cloning here: Take clones from your girls . I had success using that method. The only thing I changed was I used raw honey instead of rooting gel. Within a couple weeks the roots were busting through the peat pods I started them in.

honestly she has stretched to much, and the leaves are drooping which is a bad sign. Also miracle grow is a big no no. Whoever gifted you it, didnt know a thing about growing. You should just start fresh because this plant will disapoint you in the end.

Yeah that’s probably what I’m going to end up doing. As a last attempt to keep it alive, I may try to snip it and clone the top few inches to see if it’ll work but I’m not hopeful. Got more seeds coming in tomorrow that I’m going to start and try to grow properly with the equipment that I currently have, as ghetto as it may be lol.

Man that sumbitch stretched out boy. 18" to 24" on led bro.
