I am going to try my hand at cloning some plants. I am wondering what type of light works best for clones and what light cycle I should use? I assume 24 hours but not real sure.
I think a 17 watt T5 is good. But wait and see what others say. I haven’t had good luck with cloning.
I bought a Jiffy Hydro T5 from Wal-Mart that has worked for me. I’ve only used it for cloning twice as I mainly use it for my seedlings.
It was more of an experiment with the clones but they rooted in about 10 days
I’ve used the CFLs with success but found the environment more important to consider rather than light. They need humid conditions as they do not have roots and so feed off the surrounding air. Keeping them warm will also help.
Right now I am trying out a 15w LED flood lamp over a plastic dome from Dollarama.
They don’t look too hot right now as they were transplanted a day ago. But if I maintain that kind of environment, they will perk up. This is running in my closet 24 hours.
Good luck and HTH.

Scratch this attempt. I need a more active source of humidity within the dome and the heat from the lamp was not enough to cause better condensation. Back to CFLs and small humidifier.
I use the same indoor lights, I just place it at a really far distance
How did they work out for you? This is the first time I am trying this type of light. I took the plastic lens off to provide more heat within the dome.
Incidentally, I did not know that you could keep cuttings in a glass of water in the fridge at crisper level and they will survive. Those two were kept for about a week and it was only when I transplanted them that they sagged. Should be interesting to see how long cuttings will remain in that state and still be viable. I believe they call it “in stasis”.
Same technique as you. Keep em humid, I just spray the leaves and cover them with plastic or film.
Put it in the indoor far from the light.
I use the cloning kit with the soil and the liquid for the stem.
do you use any rooting hormones? any success cloning yet?
@ImpaLa604, I use a rooting gel and have had success with cfls and small humidier blowing mist into the dome lightly. That technique works well but finicky. It needs to be monitored for over/under misting.
This flood lamp I am using actually works better as a seedling light though. I thought the heat would be enough to provide condensation inside the dome but it wasn’t enough.
Second attempt with cfls and dome:
Sorry, it took this long to answer.
Well, what I do is keep it in a plastic cup cover in foil, that way the humidity remains there.
Spray the leaves and just the leaves, since no roots no absorbing anything. I don’t remember the name now but I use the rooting gel for clones and the round bag with soil for it.
The lights at a far distance will do, you just have to control the environmental temperature of the plastic cup, and the humidity in it.
I didn’t know about the fridge part, that’s def new to me. I’ll get my reading done about it then.
