Lights! HPS vs LED

What strain are you growing? Is it Auto, Fem or Reg? AUTO Northern Lights, Jack H and White Widow
Are you growing Indoor or outdoor? Indoor 80cmX80cmX160cm tent

So, I have a light question. My partner and I are discussing lights. I was looking at 250 W HPS Agro Sylvania because it is affordable and would have a reflector.

But he wants me to look in to LEDs, which I have done for weeks, only to find quality ones are more than I was wanting to spend. I have read many articles about HPS vs CFL vs LED and the energy used and all the technical stuff…

MY QUESTION IS…in the UK or Europe, does anyone have any recommendations for 250W LED setups that are around 40 euros, the price of the Sylvania.

ALSO…has anyone grown with the Agro Sylvania HPS bulb? what was the real world energy cost?

THANK YOU in advance.

I’m sorry to tell you that for that price there is nothing decent there. only the power supply is 40. I have 4 bars with 2 LEDs each and it was 140 only in material

I have a Samsung quantum 220w it cost around 250 euros, here in Denmark.

booo :expressionless: I had a feeling someone would say that

There’s cheaper models, but i dont think you can find one under 100 euros

any thoughts of the HPS bulb with reflector?

Sorry, dunno anything about hps growing, havent tried it. Just know that it’s cheaper to buy, but a lot more expensive to use :grin:

sigh yeah…doing some calculations with a kw hr calculator.

according to this calculator, if I use teh highest per kw hr cost I can find locally, which equals $0.16, my cost for the HPS bulb would be around $23/mth https://www.hydroponics.net/learn/hid_lamp_op_cost.php

I have the power supply/ballast.

You also need to take into consideration the temps that 250w will put out. If you need something else to control your temps, that’s added overhead on your power bill.

Yes, I’m looking at a light kit that includes ballast, bulb and cooling tube. Thanks for mentioning cooling as a cost.

I had done HPS before and just made the switch to LED. Always had heat problems in the tent with the HPS, the power cost, and because the bulbs get so hot you need to be careful of how far from the plants the bulbs need to be.
Made the switch the LED and all those problems are gone.

Hey @SenorBandito. I get it. It looks like the energy cost will end up being about 16$ per month with the HPS we chose on a 12/12 schedule, as the power company has discounted nighttime rates. I also have a cooling tube and the tent will be on a tile floor, which keeps the base cooler. We shall see how it goes.

Hi! Hps is good too! If you use a 240w led it is the same electric cost! 250 w or 240w 9t’s the same! We are a lot to have started with hps because it’s less expensive! You can switch to led later… Happy grow to you!

Thanks :sunglasses: appreciate the info.

I bought the same one @chis, to go with my MarsHydro TS2000 in my 5ftx5ft MarsHydro tent, will have a nice sea of colour, very soon, but yes @DioNySis I think the led won’t be good, but even the hps 2 40 wat would do but wouldn’t expect great yeild at that, for the extra couple euro out would be well worth it, well happy growing, and just to tell you from experience, the hps is good for flower but all depends on the tent space and other factors, hope you do great

Thank you. First grow went well. I think the wattage affected the veg stage for sure. We are looking at LED for our 2nd grow.
