So, going to cover my outdoor greenhouse for the winter soon which got me to thinking. What’s the best way to maintain the temp in there during summer? I’d love to keep the cover on for privacy reasons but it was scorching in there the 2 days I had it on this summer. Here’s a pic of the model I have below. I don’t have power right there but could run an extension cord. Any advice would be appreciated!
I’m in Southern California and this week the temps range from 75-88 and year round probably fluctuate between 60-100 Fahrenheit. We also fluctuate on the humidity as we’re technically a desert but my house is 8 miles from the Pacific Ocean. I’m not sure if this helps now that I read it to myself ![]()
The only way i was able to drop temps in my one was to get a big ass fan blowing through from one side to the other. Australian summer conditions would be similar to yours by the sounds of it (all over the place).
And when I say a big ass fan im not joking. This thing was close to 3 foot across lol
You can try a shade cloth or a small evaporated cooler
So I have a kingbird greenhouse that looks just like the one in the pic. I had my ladies in there all summer. It gets over 100°F where I live. I use shade cloth and a big ass fan (the brand is actually called that) i have the entrances facing east to west and I shade the south side of the greenhouse. I use the fan to exhaust the hot air by blowing out the top of one of the doorways. On really hot days I place another fan by the opposite door on the floor pointing up which pulls cooler air off the ground. It still got above 90 in there on occasion but nothing the girls couldn’t handle.
I figured but feel like a huge fan running all day draws more attention to it than just having the cover off lol. I could probably try runnin a shade on the inside of the cover and a normal sized fan and go from there. Wish there was an easier solution cuz I’m in a residential area and covering the green house would be nice peace of mind
Is it better to use a solid shade or a more transparent sun shade?
I use a clear pe plastic thats 60% transparent for the roof of my outdoor setup north east coast summers are fked it can be humid and rainy one year and next year cant even buy a rain day but we get high uv so i mainly use it for the uv protection and as a rain cover but which ever way you go just make sure you got good airflow up top so your circulating that trapped hot air hanging around up there ( learned that the hard way this year and lost 2 top colas to bud rot ) and as for heat issue sadly fan seems like best option followed by a shade cloth. If growing in pots and not filling the whole grow area you could put tent half in shade half in sun (if possible) and just move the pots from sun to shade end when needed. Also how is that tent? I was going to buy either that or something similar but didnt like the idea of only having small windows and vents rather than being able to roll up all 4 sides lol so just made my own with a 10x10x10ft carport, garden fence and clear tarps but still might buy one of those just to have in case i need it
I used a 40% black shade cloth. You couldn’t see in with it on and it let’s 60% of sunlight pass through
So I live in a non legal state and my neighbor is a cop. You can’t even hear my fan at the fence and my property is 1/4 acre so not all that big. This was year 2 of 2 or more plants growing in my yard. The smell is hard to cover that’s the hard part. The rest is easy breezy beautiful cover girl.
Lol blunt, any opinion on those solar fans? I’d hate to have to run power out there. AlSo Smokey, its pretty good for the price and you could roll up the sides if you wanted too for sure. The first one they sent was missing some poles so I kept the cover when I returned it and ordered a new one so I even got a back up cover lol. It’s not the most solid but that’s how those aluminum frame ones are
I have a jackery on a solar panel to run my fans. I haven’t messed with the fans that have their own panels but I don’t see why it wouldn’t be a good option.
Right on ill know ill end up getting one most likely lol and as for those solar fans i was also looking into the $30 ones on amazon but when i mentioned them to my local grow shop guy he said he bought 2 and they kinda suck so i just took his word for it but im guessing the higher end ones may work but dont take my word for it. Ive been thinking of ordering 1 or 2 anyways just to see for myself but grow shop guy has been pretty solid with info so i trust him
I might test them out. I feel like if you set up like 4 of them in there it would help out and is a cheap solution if it does work!
I know this is about greenhouses, I was thinking about buying a tuff shed with a couple sun tube lights no electricity for those. And if it doesn’t work out you can rent it out as a tiny house ![]()
I actually have a shed too and use it for the 48-72 hours of darkness before harvest and to cure, etc
Okay, so I ordered one of those fans just to test it out since I’ll be covering my greenhouse soon. I’ll try to remember to update you guys ![]()
