These are some seeds from Grimms Brothers called Z99. I am growing indoors in Fox Farms Happy Frog. No additional nutrients thus far. Notice the very yellow leaves, especially on the biggest plant? What causes this?
Of general interest, I used a new App that I downloaded on iPhone (I think it exists for Android too!) called “GrowDoc”. It claims to use machine learning to diagnose the problem from a picture. Anyhow, it’s verdict was “nitrogen deficiency”. Thoughts?
If on the middle sized plant you notice a hole in the leaf, you are correct :). Somehow, I got a tomato worm in my grow tent! Not sure how that happened. This was about 1 week ago. I killed the tomato worm and spayed all plants with Captain Jack’s bug spray. I mention this for two reasons
Maybe related to yellow leaves?
GrowDoc app identified the leaf with holes as “Spider Mites”. In this case, the app is wrong. I definitely saw and killed a tomato worm. I suppose it’s possible there are/were spider mites as well.
Anyhow, what should I do for these yellow leaves?
You are growing plants. Please don’t use ai apps for it. Yes you can use gpt-4 for basic questions. And ai will answer you like a small child.
I need to measure NPK.PH.EC and so on in your soil. But let’s start from scratch. They are very small. Why theyx are so sick?
I have some ideas, but please help me. Tell me about this pots, soil, nutes (normally enough nutes with light mix in soil for 3 weeks). Does this pots have holes at the bottom?
Ok go for it. I would take them and put them in another pot and soil. And for sure. Give less water. And don’t ask if you don’t need help. I mean how you know this?
I think if you gave already too much nutes at this stage with a normal grow mix (nutes already included) they just burned. So we need more informations. But I think if plants burn at this early stage we have to ask for all parameters.
If a cannabis plant die already as a baby, better throw it away or take all your energy to rescue them.
I want say you - I’m sorry mate. It’s just my personal opinion. Finally it’s up on you. Or tell me what you did already and I will tell you what was wrong. That’s the reason why I asked about pot and soil
Thank you @timo and @Swampgrass for the quick replies. Here is some more information. First, a confession. All seeds are from Grimms Brothers as I stated. The largest is Z99 as I stated. The middle size one is UberWensch, and the smallest one is Rosetta. I put the seeds in water on October 1st. I put the resulting sprouts in soil on October 6th. I forgot to record when they poked out of the soil but I believe it was 2 or 3 days after putting them in soil, so so October 8th or 9th. They were planted in Fox Farms Happy Frog soil. NO nutrients or additives of any type have been added thus far! I have a water meter. I wait until the water meter shows “dry” and I look to see that they are dry before watering. Thus, I’m doubtful I’m overwatering. I did make that mistake before but I’ve learned to restrain myself when it comes to watering. Yes, the pots have holes in the bottom.
I do not meaure PH or anything else. I’m happy to do so, but it always sounded too complicated. Point me to an easy way to do it, and PH meter, and I’ll do so!
The plants are on a heat mat that is set to 77 degrees F. The temperatures here (Southern California - Coastal) might get to high 50s during the night, but these plants are inside a tent, inside a garage, so I suspect it’s warmer than that. The light is a LED light 1000W (but I’m told that’s advertising jargon and it’s really only 96 watts and probably only good for 2 plants). The light is: BLOOM PLUS LED Grow Light BP 1000W from Amazon. It’s about 18 inches from tops of plants.
Again, the only other factor (I think!) is that I had to spray them with Capt. Jacks bug spray due to finding one tomato worm on middle size plant. I have no idea how I introduced a tomato worm! The history of the small plant is it seemed to “burn” as soon as it sprouted. That is the first two leaves got really brown. I was going to just throw the plant away (and I might still do that) but I figured, “what the heck” and let it go on growing. Amazingly, it is still alive.
Let me know if I can provide more information and thanks for reading!
I am a beginner myself, but Just googling yellow cannabis leaves and it came back a calcium deficiency. Looks exactly like yours. Maybe give her a little cal/mag. 1/4-1/2 strength first. Testing the pH is really easy. Get yourself a pH meter from Amazon. They are cheap, but don’t get the cheapest like I did. I didn’t trust it now I have 2. Lol 6.0-6.5 seems to be good, 6.2 is my target.
@Swampgrass Please let me know what PH meter you got! Do you put yours directly in the soil? My water meter claims to measure PH and light intensity. It is this one: Amazon.com The brand is Alpine. I just use it for moisture now. The PH always came out as 8. That can’t be correct. How do I know it’s wrong? When I stick it in soil still in the bag, it says 8! For different brands of soil! So I’m 99% sure it’s not accurate. The light meter might be correct, but I’ve found the apps on the iPhone are easier to use (and I suspect better).
Finally, what do you do if your PH is too high? How do you lower it to 6.2?
Thanks!
This plant is far too young to be having a Calcium Deficiency this early on. Calcium Deficiency will generally start as small “rust spots” on the upper leaves not starting from the bottom of the plant. We can cross that off.
Avoid AI and other silly website articles that have zero credibility as far as growing Cannabis goes. I can’t tell you how many Cannabis articles I see written on the web with false information. Then you get to the bottom of the article to see who the source is and its written by a meteorologist Find info from websites with creditable people who specialize in the specific field your wanting to learn about. And make sure you can see the scientific data to back the claims.
What it looks like to me judging by the leaves begining to curl downward, yellowing/fading and splotching is you are Overwatering due to the soil mix.
My advice would be to wait till the plant dries, and re-mix some soil with a good ratio of soil and perlite. Id say about 70% Soil 30% Perlite. Transplant into a new pot and fill the pot up all the way. Go light on the next 2 waterings and I bet the plant will bounce back.
Quick question tho, I see the perlite but what brand are you using? And what soil?
This is the one I have. I think we are talking about two different things. Talking about testing the water before watering. The soil ph is different. The water should be 6.0-6.5. I shoot for 6.2. PH up or PH down solution will be what to need to raise it lower the water pH. Most of the time you have to lower the PH. Tap water is really high, 8.0 or higher. From what I understand if the water pH is too high the plant has a hard time absorbing the nutrients. I don’t really worry about the soil ph too much. I use Happy Frog which is around 6.3-6.8. My pH of the water is 6.2 so that will keep the soil in range. Either at 8.0 is too high. IMO. I’m still learning also, so hopefully others will chime in if I’m wrong.
Bro I think this is your problem here. If I understand correctly you put them in water for 5 days before planting? That is far too long for them to sit in water - they will either drown, or be stunted if they do grow. This is probably why they are not doing well. No amount of adjusting nutrients can help now, they will struggle for their whole lives.
Sorry to say but you should probably start again. It will save you a lot of frustration.
I just finished a grow with a similar problem, the stunted plant was 25% the size of the others.
If you soak the seeds, only let them sit in water for a maximum of 12 hours. Once they sink they are fully saturated and can be planted in the medium.
Thanks for the response @SJ1 . I thought sprouting the seeds in water (until the root comes out) and then transferring to soil was an accepted way of germinating seeds. In the past I’ve done this method, and also put seeds straight in dirt. They both seem to work, but the putting in water until tap root comes out seems slightly more reliable and that’s why I did it this time. Thanks!
Thanks @Swampgrass , I’ll check that all out. And since it’s on Amazon I know I can actually get it. Water in southern California is definitely high pH and considered “hard” water. In fact we have problems with faucets and appliances because the water leaves mineral deposits which mess things up. Some folks get a whole house water softener. I don’t have one unfortunately. Glad to see you are using Happy Frog soil too, so I can compare to you! As I said, my 3-way Alpine meter from Amazon claims that the Happy Frog soil (fresh, in the bag!) is 8.0 so I’m pretty sure the pH part of the meter is useless!
Thanks @Eastbound_E . Soil is Happy Frog from FoxFarms. Perlite is from Sta-Green. I also sometimes use Vermiculite from Sta-Green. But mostly I use soil, so I can trying upping the Perlite to 30%.
Maybe I’m getting faulty water readings with my meter. They are small pots so it’s hard to really get the probe in deep without damaging the plant. I’ll try cutting back on water and transfer to bigger pots. For the bigger pots, I have fabric pots that I’ve had good luck with in the past. They are more “idiot proof” in that they let excess water drain out quickly through the fabric.
It is one way sure but not for 5 days. 12, 18hrs maximum. If you really want to see the taproot sprout then use the paper towel method. Me, I soak until they sink (4-6hrs usually), so I know they are fully saturated, then plant straight into the medium. As long as the seeds are good, this works well for me.
Re. starting again, I know that sounds drastic, but I can tell you from direct experience that persisting with your plants will be just a very stressful and bad experience, you wont learn much, if anything and the result will be a complete waste of time.
You can save yourself all that hassle by taking the decision to start over now, and then in 3 months can look forward to a great result.
The one on the right, at that age, will never make it. The one in the middle too I’d say, sorry. Much better to realise that now than after 3 months of hard work.
As for ph meters, I’d stay away from the dirt cheap ones, they are too unreliable. But you don’t need to spend $$$ either. About $30 is a good price point for something decent.
Get rid of the Vermiculite completely and run only soil and perlite. Avoid vermiculite and peat moss, all it will give you is moisture and oxygen issues at the roots.
Like I said, just use soil and perlite with a proper mix. Cut out all other stuff. Transplant when the plant dries into the new mix and go light on the next couple waterings. Dont even pH the water either those two waterings. Fox Farms usually has soil buffers to keep the pH balanced.
There is no need to start over, this isn’t some huge issue that completely tainted your grow… Ignore any discouragement just let it dry, repot and give it time
Have you turned the plant upside down and pulled it from the pot? Those look like little flower pots. Id love to see the root structure. Im sure they are root bound also. There’s alot of great advise that has been gi ven in here. Personally I’d toss that middle plant. I could save the others but youll need to invest in atleast 3 vallon pots. Just my opinion.
Update. Thanks all for the advice. Here’s some recent (today) pics. They seem to be bouncing back. I haven’t watered in a couple of days (I did water after taking this picture). I’ll try and buy some new soil (FoxFarms Ocean Forest) and replant at least the big one today. As I said, I’m limited by the fact I have just the one light ( BLOOM PLUS LED Grow Light BP 1000W) so I will probably have to get rid of one or two of the plants. I’ll probably post a separte quetion, but I’d like to get a complete tent/light/fans/etc. kit soon. Something to grow 1-2 plants only. It occurs to me that Black Friday is coming up and it might be a good time to look.
For those reading this in the future, I believe @Eastbound_E and others were correct about the over-watering? How could I be overwatering if the water meter said “dry”? I measured the top of the soil. When I pushed the probe up from the bottom of the pot (through the holes in planter) I got that it was soaked! So, either overwatering, and/or water getting stuck at bottom of pot despite holes in bottom!
I read the specifications of the light your using and although it says 1000w, doesn’t mean thats what its actually pulling 1000w. Most likely thats just what the LED chips all together are rated up to. The light is only drawing 90w if you read the specifications. Thats pretty darn low, especially come flower plants need a lot more light.
Your plants will still flower under the light, but you most likely won’t yield much, less potency and larfy buds. You still end up with some product though.
If your on a budget and need a decent light to get you good results Id say go with MarsHydro. The TS600 or TS1000 will work well for you if your only trying to run 2 plants at a time. Ive vegged 3-4 plants with a single TS600. Then flower 2 max. Always had dense nugs and surprisingly impressive yields.
Black Friday would be a good time to shop for all your gear. I don’t know where you get seeds but Seedsman usually runs really good deals on Black Friday. Be a good time to stock up on some genetics.
Thanks once again @Eastbound_E ! Yeah, I figured out the light was really was was only about 95w. When I have more money, I definitely want a new light OR BETER YET, a whole indoor tent/setup. I’m too shy to post my homemade tent picture, but if you want a good laugh at my expense, check out:
I stopped posting on thcfarmer after that dressing down! But they are right, I need something better. I’ve had fair luck with outdoor grows, but now is not the time (in Southern California) for outdoor grows. Again, Black Friday might be a great time for lights and/or a whole new setup.
And yes, I’ve had good luck with Seedsman. My two favorites thus far are Alaskan Purple Auto, and BadAzz Cream Cream Cheese (photoperiod), both of which got me very stoned. I also shop at Grimms Bros. Their stuff is cheap (the Tester seeds) but (1) didn’t get me as stoned, and (2) I had some problems with mold on my outside grows (but that could be due to me screwing up).
I gotta say thats a creative setup some ingenuity right there. My setup was pretty mediocre when I first started out dont even trip! Sometimes you just gotta work with what you got right? My first “tent” was just a wooden box I built from some wood I had laying around. Built a frame then slapped some ply wood around the sides and made a 5x2 box just enough for two plants. And it worked great! I went through 5 or 6 grows before I decided to change my setup. Now I just keep them in an open room didnt even bother with a tent. Not everyone can do that though.
Alaskan Purple is an awesome strain! I got two of them as freebies from an order about 4 years back. Ended up being the strain I enjoyed most over the Crystal Meth Auto and Auto Purple which were the ones I originally purchased.
Your right Id definitely would wait till Black Friday, save up a little more and just get it all once at a better deal.
