The only true way to tell is to look at the trichomes with a microscope (the frost on the buds), first they go from being clear to milky looking then from milky to a darker amber color. You wanna aim for all/mostly milky with about 15-30% amber depending on you preference of the type of effect you are wanting from them. If you harvest with minimal amber it gives a slightly less potent energetic head high and if you harvest with 15-30% amber it will be at its most potent peak with a quick effect of a potent couch lock kinda high. Most growers prefer to harvest at 15-30% because the thc is at its highest point and its effects hit harder and last longer! @Kshaughn this is what I use, but for a few bucks more there is a usb camera online that connect to your phone also works great
