I know the small growth close to the stock is larf, but what about the small stuff towards the top? Is this necessary growth or is it stealing energy from the plant? Guess it comes down to keep it or get rid of it?

Do you mean will that be larf when grown out? If so it’s up to you what to do. Depends on if you want stuff to make concentrates, hash, etc. If you just want smoke then focus on making main colas.
My last grow I only wanted massive colas with no larf. But then I got a rosin press and realised I would have liked to have a bunch of larf to press lol.

Ah ok. So pretty much dealers choice! Might remove it then. We have no need for it, no press or anything. Just going for nice buds.
In that case you can be pretty brutal. Take off everything up to the top colas.
