Refrigerator drying

Has anyone ever dried their plant or flowers in a mini fridge? If so, do you recommend it?

I think there’s a convo here where they go into that. Search the vivosun smart curing box and there was a bunch of people talking about making one with a mini fridge

I tried it out with a small handful of buds from my last grow and it works okay. It wasn’t any faster than hanging up in the tent but I just wanted to see if it was possible in case I have an early finisher. I put the buds in a paper bag and left that open on the shelf and it took about 9 days I think. I will say the fridge you use must be completely empty and clean and when I say clean I mean sterile type of clean. I made the mistake of putting a pot of stew in the same fridge on the last day without thinking, completely changed the smell of the buds overnight and ruined it. The bud I tried the day before was nice though.

It’s only my second grow so I’m not super experienced but I’ve dried both grows in the fridge. I’m doing it like that because

  • Low temps → slow dry → better preservation of terps
  • No stress about keeping the right temp and rh. The fridge does it for you
  • I only have one tent, so this allows me to harvesting plant before the others

I have pizza boxes with some extra holes cut out on the side, lined with baking paper where I put the buds. then I put those in the fridge which is at the lowest setting (12 degrees). And then I turn the buds every day so they don’t become flat.

In my experience it takes 14-21 days of drying before they can go to the jars but I guess it depends on the temp in the fridge and size of the buds.

And it’s indeed crucial to have an empty fridge. I’ve had some similar experience as crackadoo but opposite.. my food was tasting like weed :joy:

It’s typically done in a wine fridge but the is a method for drying in a fridge.

Got it, I’m not too familiar with it so wasn’t sure. I wouldn’t mind one of those cannatrol or whatever they’re called lol

Thanks for the replies guys. I have an unused brand new mini fridge in my garage im looking to try out. Im tired of using my grow tent for the drying side and if I can use the fridge and preserve more terps, I can keep growing without interruptions. Ill do some research and make sure I can get the parameters dialed in before hand. Hopefully I can give some good feedback from the adventure

Interesting idea. I’ve not tried that but it might be a good strategy for me to try. My growing and drying conditions pose the risk of bud rot, drying in a mini fridge might reduce that risk during that phase.

The research ive done indicates the fridge (as long as it’s a frost free) will pull down to 60% humidity or a little lower. Im looking for the lower temps. I also want to keep a grow going while drying. Ill be sure to share the experience on here though
