Small red spiders in compost

I keep getting small red spiders in my compost buckets. Everything I read says spider mites but they seem too big and fast to be spider mites. I can see them plainly with my bare eyes, another reason I don’t think they are spider mites. I don’t currently have photos or videos of them. This is the best photo I could get. I don’t know how to upload videos.

I’ve used Mammoth canncontrol, neem oil, and DE and nothing is getting rid of them. I did have spider mites on a couple plants and I couldn’t see those without magnification but the ones in the soil I can see with no problem.

I can only assume its some other kind of mite if not spider mites :face_with_peeking_eye:

Could they be clover mites? Little red spiders that are visible to the eye. I get those spiders up here and have seen a few in my outdoor garden but the natural predator bugs feast on them so they never last long

I would play it safe rather than sorry and spray seem oil on the plans and on the top of the soil. Maybe some essential oils to keep them away

Look like this?

I have sprayed neem oil and it doesn’t do much to them. I mixed Mammoth canncontrol, neem oil and dish soap in the same spray bottle and sprayed them.

The bugs or the plants??

Also my favorite go to has become this brand called Sevin. It worked amazing when I had a HUGE infestation of fungus gnats, it is a different issue but it said it covered for mites too. It is now my go to if my neem does jt work. And I don’t think Sevin should be used when flowers are present only while in veg and stretch. After that I would only resort to natural oil extracts such as neem which you said you tried. But there is horticulture oil, and others that you can try. It’s a good thing you are on top of it. Also check the bottom see whether they r only on top or if they are going through the bottom. Because if they are going for the roots you will need to do a neem oil soak.

I sprayed the top of the compost buckets. The compost buckets are the only place I see them atm. I have the compost buckets indoors so I’m not sure where they came from. I’ve dumped the buckets in the backyard every time I find the bugs. I don’t want to chance any damage to my plants. I’ll check into the sevin product. I live off a fixed income, disabled, so I’m on a budget. Thanks for all the help so far!! Is it possible to upload videos?

I do not believe you can upload videos. Sevin is cheap. Trust me

I bought 2 spray bottles of Sevin and Bioadvanced for insects, diseases, and mites. I want to thank you all for helping me with this issue.

Well, friend, I advise you if you find this product, dressing for red spiders. Whenever I had a problem with those bugs I used this product and it was truly wonderful. Here I leave you a description and image of the acaricide.

ionic-spidermite-100ml

Spidermite is a very effective 100% biological insecticide for quickly eliminating mites and red spiders . It is formulated based on “TEOA” natural oils and extracts that are very effective for the treatment of these pests and as a leaf cleaner.

Growth Technology is the same manufacturer as Ionic fertilizers or the famous Clonex and Formulex marijuana growing products . Spidermite is a very effective insecticidal product against pests, and because it is natural, Spidermite is safe for the environment. It does not include any chemical agents and can be used in home gardening as a leaf cleaner or to combat red spiders. It can be sprayed even when the crop is in the advanced flowering phase.

It puts an end to the advance of the red spider in marijuana cultivation even in the last days of harvest without affecting the bud.

Biological insecticide against red spider Spidermite SMC.

Spidermite has no safety period thanks to its biological origin and can also be used as a preventive treatment for red spider, one of the pests most feared by growers, and not only because of its difficult elimination in closets and indoor crops , but also because it is very possible that once it settles in the crop it could appear again.

The Spidermite biological acaricide is very effective, it acts by physical action so that by covering the red spider and the mites they die from asphyxiation. It is effective against eggs and larvae, so we must impregnate the entire plant (stems and leaves at the top and bottom) avoiding wetting the buds too much.

With the biological insecticide Spidermite we can treat everything from adult plants to mother plants, cuttings or seedlings (these last three are very prone to catching mites due to their low defenses).

Eliminate red spider in indoor cultivation with Spidermite from Ionic.

With a 100ml bottle you obtain 4 liters of maximum intensity spray.

How to use SMC Spidermite control.

We will mix 25ml of the biological acaricide Spidermite for each liter of water and apply it by spraying (foliar application), on stems and leaves on both sides (since the eggs are usually on the back of the leaves).

With one application we should practically eradicate the pest, but for greater security we recommend making a second application a week or 10 days later.

Triethanolamine: 5%

Coriander oil: 1%

Thanks for the information. Do you know if it will hurt my earthworms? Since these small visible spiders are in my indoor compost buckets I don’t want my worms warmed. Happy growing

Hello stoner friend, I don’t think they will harm your worms in the soil. With the fact that these red spiders are identified as belonging to the mite families and in general, they only bother the plants and especially the flowers, covering them with cobwebs and preventing the flower from developing well, in addition to causing botrytis and mold problems. But I think they shouldn’t bother the worms.

I’ve searched eBay and Amazon and can’t find it. Do you know where to buy it?

I checked your link and it sent me right too it. Thanks again

It won’t let me purchase bc of being in the usa. I checked both links and they ask me to change countries to purchase.

Ok now I understand, well the best thing is to ask a grow shop near your area so that they can buy you that acaricide for lost, the only thing would be like that or look for something similar! well good smokes buddy

Let’s see if this grow shop in England can maybe send products to America because of course I live in Spain and here you can find European products and not from America, while there I think the same thing happens in that it is difficult to get a product from Europe.

I saw the Growers ally on eBay. I think I’ll get some of it to try. Again thanks for all the information. This is one of the best places to get good reliable information.
