So not sure if I am the only one that has a worm farm going so I can control my casting content. I’ve found with other plants it pays off 10 fold. If anyone else keeps little gold makers what do you feed them to keep your trees happy and healthy growing organic?
Worms like used coffee grounds, crushed egg shells, and wilted lettuce.
I have been giving them a lot of grounds being a avid coffee drinker. Im looking to start shooting for the perfect PCN mixture to feed them for the castings.
I have a worm bin I started back in the summer. Our local equestrian center had advertised free composted horse manure. I used this in addition to well rotted wood chips I gouged out from a tree along with composted leaves and cardboard for bedding.
In addition to the usual foodstuff mentioned above, worms love well ripened fruit like avocados. I’ve managed to pick up some pumpkins from halloween that I cut up and froze. Worms love it as well. Right now I’ve just added some fall leaves that have begun to compost and you can see them crawling all over, if you are fast enough.
Remnants of some pumpkin at bottom left, funny how they go for the rind first rather than the pulp.
Thanks Canagen, for the share. I wanted to see if anyone has tried organic fert before I did but went ahead and took a small batch of worms put some sun gold and let them at it. To my suprise three days later i have babey worms and fat boys just going nuts breaking down the firt into amazing soil or that I hope
You are on your way. I am fairly new to the game myself so don’t know too much about C/N ratios but from what I’ve read, not too much greens as it tends to generate heat during decomposition and kill them off. Big time coffee drinker here too so they get their share of the dregs.
Welcome to the Rabbit Hole!
I have a worm farm. Vermicompost is amazing!
Feed:
- Egg Shells: 2tbsp/week max, cleaned, ground.
- Fruit / Veg Scraps
- Fan Leaves (From veg only)
I avoid citrus and coffee grounds for the most part because they are so acidic. Small amounts are okay but you want to be mindful of it.
Bedding:
- Pure CoCo Coir (Canna CoCo)
- Straw (If I can find any)
- Strips of newspaper/kraft paper
The bottom 4" of my bin is CoCo Coir. On top of that I put the straw & paper. I try to bury all my feed 3-4" below the surface of my bedding.
There is a local guy in town who raises & sells red wriggler worms. I purchased about 500 worms & a pile of compost filled with worm eggs for $20. I have so many worms available in my bin it’s unreal. I’ll never need to buy more because they just keep breeding!
Vermicompost Sources:
These are the 2 main sources I default to for information. The guy at Burnaby red wrigglers knows his stuff!!
@canagen worms seem to go crazy for pumpkin & squash!
