Yellow brittle bottom leaves?

Growlog link: [ Reboot #1 growlog - Grow with Jane ] But it’s pretty empty, see my other posts for more context.

I’ve transitioned to flowering 12 days ago and I’ve noticed my plants have yellow brittle leaves at the bottom. The top is pretty bushy and green, but they haven’t declared their sex yet, nor have they stretched that much (but I haven’t measured them so I can’t really be totally sure :face_with_peeking_eye:)…

Any idea what’s going on? They’re supplemented with bio-grow, bio-Flo and top-max from biobizz. My water PH is around 6.5. I water them when the top soil is dry on at least an inch or two (they’re in fabric pots) with a liter each (some run off).

Thanks! :folded_hands:t2:

If the leaves turn yellow from bottom to top, there are two possible reasons for this.
The first would be that the plant relocates the stored nutrients to the upper part of the plant, which is not bad.
The second reason would be that the plant is not getting enough nutrients. This could be either because the soil is a bit too dry and the plant therefore cannot access the available nutrients in the soil, or because the plant needs more nutrients and the supply should be increased.
First, I would check the soil moisture to see if everything is in order or if perhaps some water is missing. If everything is in order there, I would increase the amount of nutrients.

Bit of an update!

They’re flowering all right, I cut a few fan leaves and soft trained them to make sure most buds see the light.

But they’re still too Yellow for my taste, including higher leaves, sorry the pics are not good but the led really throws my phone camera for a loop. They don’t seem dry soiled and I’ve upped the nutrients a bit but…

(Don’t mind the burnt leaves, my temp probe had fallen to the ground the other day and the heater ran non stop and burnt them :grimacing::face_with_peeking_eye:)

Any additional advice to make sure I can harvest in a few weeks? :folded_hands:t2:

That soil looks very dry. How big are your fabric pots and how much are you watering? For a 10gal you’d want to be watering 1 gallon per watering. In fabric pots they dry from the tops as well as the sides. Lifting the pot is the best way to tell if they need water. Lift it fully watered and note how heavy it is to you. Then when it’s dry you’ll know it’s time to water. Looking at your plant it definitely looks hungry.

They’re 11L (3gal) pots and I water about 1L (.3gal) each per day or per watering, depending.

I do weigh them to assess if they’re too dry or not, as well as putting my finger in the soil and I water when it’s too light or when there’s 1in dry soil on top and/or 2in on the sides.

Is that not enough?

I had trouble with overwatering at the beginning and I guess I’m maybe too overly cautious now :grimacing::face_with_peeking_eye:

Thanks :folded_hands:t2:

A soil sensor for measuring soil moisture might be helpful. Sometimes the soil is dry on top, but still wet in the lower area. Are there already affordable models that also measure soil pH?

I have no idea but I can’t buy any more devices for now :frowning: (and if I could I think it would be a green light so I don’t have to wait so long to check on them)

I’ve also tested my runoff water’s pH and it seemed right. I will again tonight.

For sure the soil is always wet almost all the way to the bottom and for about 4-5in all around the plant except for that top inch.

I could water more until I had a big runoff though, I usually get a small one only

I’ll try watering more for a few days and see what happens :crossed_fingers:t2:

PH should only be measured before watering, as the pH values from the runoff are not accurate and can fluctuate greatly, they are usually incorrect. Always only measure EC values from the runoff.
Are you cultivating organically ( with soil life ) or not?

I measure before adding nutrients to my water and after, and once in a while I check my runoff water too.

I have normal soil “terreau” it’s called here.

Update: seems watering more often did the trick.

They’re not big/tall but they look better than before and are flowering fine.

4 weeks in, another 4 I guess?

Good to hear that it has gotten better
