Defoliation tips

When should I start defoliation? A lot of the underside is really bushy… I’m just not 100% sure which leaves are okay to remove

I guess I could just lay a couple 6500k lights under them so there’s no light issues

You could start now @QuickMaffs , they are bushy and the bigger fans lower could go to help with air flow, then I see you have plenty of bud stems already and if there bigger fans are covering any sites, get rid, you will have more coming back, and will need to do it again, so if I was you I’d take some off not to much first but till you are happy with it, good luck pal

Peace, how does these look. The smallest one is in the flushing process.

I can already see the light and air increase haha.
This is the only photo I have, but have 3 autos on their way that are in the seedling stage. I’m wondering if I should flip her into flower and get that going so I only have autos in the tent

Hi @QuickMaffs, good job,
On looking at your girl, I think you could wait a little longer for your bud sites to become more sturdy, but it’s your preference, but looking good,
And look forward to seeing how it does :+1:

I’ll give it a bit and see what happens… I just don’t want it throwing too much shade on the autos haha. otherwise, I’ll have to make it work until the autos are harvested, then flip it to flowering. Idk how well the autos will do with a 12/12 schedule. I know they aren’t light-dependent like that, but I’m sure an 18/6 schedule would produce better buds on them, right?

@DeAzNuTz If you scroll up there’s more pics (before I tied her down). How soon do you think she’ll be ready to top? Or should I just count the 5th or 6th node? I just chopped a bunch of fan leaves off this morning so idk if I should give her a break or not

jk. The pics before the tie down is in another topic haha

Your photo is looking beautiful and @Deanroche is correct, your girl is a bit too young for the bud sites to worry about. I used to top at 3rd node but that’s a bit too short so now I like to top at 4th and sometimes 5th node. It’s really a personal preference. I would recommend try fifth node this way you’ll get a few more main colas. Just because you took a couple of leaves that’s really not stressful so you can top it without any worries. Your girl didn’t need to have those leaves taken off at that young stage because the plant is using those leaves to catch and convert the light to energy which is called photosynthesis.

I top my plants almost every day in VEG to make the canopy grow even. Sometimes I take off half the plant to even it out because when it’s time to flip to flower your canopy is going to be nice and even and the light will hit every bud site which will give you higher yield. Here’s a pic of how much I take off to make it even :point_down:t3:

@QuickMaffs I highly recommend watching these 2 videos to learn more about topping to maximize on yield, here’s a link with a few videos on “topping” subject :point_down:t3:

Here’s a video on how & when to properly Defoliate :point_down:t3:

Once you watch both of these videos you’ll have a clear understanding when to defoliate and when to top and how to top to get maximum yield. These videos are extremely helpful so make sure you watch them. They are only a few minutes long.

I don’t speak Spanish but your girls are looking nice :+1:t3:

The only thing I suggest is next time try to keep your canopy more even when you flip them to flower so they grow evenly and all of the colas will receive an equal amount of light without shadowing some of them. Otherwise they look great!

You’re very welcome brother! I’m glad you found it helpful. Those guys are definitely professionals and they have tried many different styles but ended up following the schwa’s process just like he does it in his book. The actually went to Mr schwaz’s warehouse and watched him do his cycle from seed to harvest and they started duplicating his process and they said that this is the best outcome they have ever had and started growing only like that. I tried it also and I will never go back to how I used to do it because my harvest was almost half the weight in comparison to the weight I get now. Also it’s so much fun topping he plants so many times and really controlling the bushiness and the height, It fascinates me really does. I’m a nutcase when it comes to growing because I’m a perfectionist and I love a challenge and this growing Style is definitely giving me that challenge and keeps me busy. I find it almost therapeutic to grow my own ganja :slightly_smiling_face::sunglasses:

Get all of what your saying @DeAzNuTz , Iv got 2 quick gorilla fem going now only switched to 12/12 couple days Ago, I’m thinking can I do that now or just take off all the lower stuff that don’t get light, it’s just I’m already into flower but I think I could take off a good bit and still have a good level canapé,

Or should I wait till next time and do it while still in veg?
I really do get where you’re coming from with working on your plants, great time passer, and got some work to do still with these 2, but I love it
So again cheers for all the information :+1:

I too find it therapeutic growing this stuff. Gives me a wonderful hobby and something to look forward to. Stressed? check out, maintain plants. Extra stressed? Roll up some plant and maintain plants. Win 4 ever :joy:

That’s a great question! You could do a full defoliation if you haven’t done it when you flipped it to flower. But topping it is already too late because the plant already entered the flowering mode and you will stunt the growth If you start topping it now. Don’t worry about this batch but the next one you know how to top it and when to defoliate and how many times. If you follow those videos then you’ll see how great your plans will respond to this type of trimming and of course your end result/yield will be much better

I just thought about it and if you literally just flip them two days ago then nothing will happen if you top them and even out the canopy. You just going to have to let them veg for another week or so until the canopy evens out. Before you top them, I highly recommend watching those topping videos so you don’t take off too much.

Agreed! Soothes the soul…

Iv already got lots of tops that I topped and done really well, out of one top I got 5 separate stems, crazy, never saw like it before

Noob question alert:

lots of tops… I was under the impression you’re only supposed to top the main cola… are you telling me I can top literally all of the bud sites and come out with more??
