Has anyone here taken clones from your growing girls in the veg stage? Im super pleased with the progress my plants are making and I want to take some clones from them. Anybody have any experience? I have the main idea down but I would love to hear from someone whos actually done it! Cheers!
Welcome to the community @HighThere5149.5, I’ve tried once with no luck but I tried a cheapo rooting powder instead of the good rooting gel. I’ve seen posts on here about cloning so I’m sure someone will chime in and walk you through it.
I’ve done some cloning and this is how I do it.
After cutting the clone(s) I place them in water while I prepare the containers. When ready, I slice off the portion I want to keep at a steep angle to maximixe the surface area of the cut. I then lightly scrape off the outer skin for about an inch, dip into rooting gel and plant in moist soil. The clone is then kept under cover to minimize moisture loss. Since it does not have roots yet, its leaves will need to feed off the moisture within your cloning environment. Thus you need to ensure proper humidity levels either by spraying occasionally or have an active source of moist air. That’s pretty much the readers digest version.
These two GDP clones were taken off 1 week after flip and stored in a glass of water in the fridge for over 2 weeks. I just couldn’ t get around transplanting.
Transplanted 3 days ago:
The fan leaves keep drooping and touching the rim until I spray. This is how I judge if the dome has sufficient moist air. Note the folded newspaper I need to keep moist at all times. I try not to spray directly on the leaves and if I do, it is on the underside.
This one is still waiting:
It is actually a small experiment I am doing to see how long I can keep cuttings viable in the fridge. We will see. Just remember that humidity is the most important factor to consider. For lighting you can use cheap CFLs.
Fan leaves have started to lift off the rim again. One thing I neglected to mention is you want a warm spot for your clones.
@canagen When I try to clone my girls again. A very long time ago I tried but I did not succeed, there was no availability of information and then no need at all… Canagen you are generally a handsome man laid out everything on the shelves also with photos. I bow to you and respect you, I wish I could shake your hand. I think you understand me)
To add what @sedrik777 said about soaking the cuttings in water use ice cold water soak them for half an hour or so it shocks them and stiffens the cuttings up works good
Thank you, I have all the information memorized and recorded. Now there is no need for this, for the next cycle I will choose some other variety and use organic fertilizers. Thank you guys!
Ice cold water usually works on most of the plants. Mostly when they are al droopy
Just to update the state of the clone, I decided to post this here for the sake of continuity.
I have modified my setup somewhat by adding a larger dome over the original dome. I surrounded the base with loosely folded moist newspaper. It sits by the window just over a heat register with a CFL on top.
The fan leaves are now starting to raise and react to the light. I believe roots are beginning to develop at this stage. How I can tell when they are ready to sustain the clone is by simply removing the dome(s) off and watch for wilt of the whole plant. That can take as little as 10 minutes. If it does just spray and re-cover. Clones can take anywhere from 3-4 weeks to set in my experience.
I think by next week I can start removing the domes and see how far along they are.
HTH. Cheers.
