Mmh, I have everything here.
Blumat drip irrigation.
I don’t know where the hype comes from.
It’s too annoying for me.
First of all, the reservoir has to be high up for it to run.
Setting those things up is a never-ending hassle.
At some point I had runoff.
It came out at the bottom.
Everything is described as so fool-proof, and it’s not.
Up to the point where the reservoir can leak out if the carrots have issues in the valve.
Auto Pot !
I’ve only been working with living soil so far.
Right there, water paired with enough oxygen in the soil is key.
In the Auto Pot Flex fabric pot, it gets too dry on the inside sides towards the top and permanently soaking wet at the bottom.
Not perfect for living soil at all.
That accounts for 50 % of the harvest.
Last run.
None of the plants in the Auto Pot got over 100 g dry. The dry results were around 75 - 90 g per plant.
The Sour Diesel hand-watered from above yielded twice as much. I was at around 160 g there.
Now they’re coming out with the Auto Pot Tray2grow, which is supposed to be more effective for living soil.
Yeah yeah, what else are we supposed to buy?
It’s just that with this soil, because of the soil microbes, keeping it consistently moist yields the best results.
Too wet, and the whole thing turns anaerobic very quickly, harmful bacteria take over, everything slows down and the plant suffers. Too dry - the soil life dies.
That’s why I want to run pure hand-watering again.
With the sensors I can control the soil moisture a bit so I can stay close to the moisture peak.
I’ll use the Autopot again when I feed mineral nutrients.
It’s just that I still have three in living soil and three with Bio Tabs, which goes in a similar direction, just prepared a bit differently.
Just found the first flying fungus gnat and slapped it right away. Well, that was one.
So I did see larvae after all.
Adding a few yellow sticky traps right away too. Yesterday I distributed 6,000 predatory mites to all final pots and nursery pots.
10 million nematodes will follow when moving into the final pots.
Then it’ll be quiet soon.
And things are starting up in the tent. Life is slowly coming.
The last Amnesia Skittlez Auto lost a lot of time after placing it in the final pot in 3 % living soil.
That brought a good 10-day growth stall. She is 17 days old today and hasn’t grown much yet. But for the past 2 days she’s been moving forward again.

Whether she stays depends on if there’s a failure among the germinating ones.
A photoperiod Wedding Cake put into soil 5 days ago was still closed yesterday and hadn’t even swollen up.
Now she’s in moist cotton wool.
The Tropical Kush moved from cotton wool into a Jiffy. Second attempt, showing today.

Her actual nursery pot and the Jamaican’s.
I emptied the 2 pots yesterday and squeezed the soil.
Conclusion; nothing is too wet there. When squeezing, not a single drop of water came through between the fingers. So almost rather too dry. But moist enough for the root ball to stay together.
So the germination issue and then rotting of the seedling root was probably due to larvae nibbling on it.
The Jamaican bean should show something in the Jiffy tomorrow then.
The Strawberry had no problem and leaves everyone behind.

Since this morning, Sherbet Queen

is also in the mix and as you can see on the soil surface. The protection is there.
That’s carrier material in which the predatory mites are now hunting.
About 2 days ago, the 2nd attempt with the last seed of the Mexican

was also successful. But the seed before that popped too and then died as a seedling.
But this one keeps going so far.
This Wedding Cake bean was a freebie seed.
Maybe it was too dry for it in the soil. Then something should still happen in the moist cotton wool.
Back to the severely underdeveloped A. Skittlez.
The soil itself seems fine, which you can see from the nice green cover crop.
Was a mistake to germinate in rockwool and then put it into soil far too early.
That cost many, many days that can’t be made up for.
Today I’m setting the dimmer to 23 %. But still an enormous light distance. It’s still 117 - 121 cm.
Good things take time.
Two are still missing, and I hope they’ll show up soon.
And if the Strawberry grows too big of a lead, I’ll trim her, and since it was the last seed,
I’ll make clones out of her.
The first one turned out pretty tasty.
Now heading outside with Gizmo for now.
Wishing you a nice Sunday.

That sucks the blumats aren’t working for you. I have the preset carrots and never have an issue setting up. I have a 55 gallon reservoir that is 3 feet off the ground and I learned not to let it drop below half full to maintain proper pressure. They absolutely crush for me. I found it easiest to not take them down between grows it keeps the soil at the correct moisture for my living soil to stay living. Jeremy from buildasoil.com uses autopots and tray2grow without issue. He has a bunch of YouTube videos setting them up and using them. He’s also where I fell in love with blumats. Hopefully you can find something that works for you.

Moin all :heart::deciduous_tree:

@Pflanzenpaul yeah I’m so grateful that you write about the Blumats in such detail. I was on the verge of getting some myself to eliminate myself as a source of error. But reading this, I’d probably mess up even more than if I just consistently water myself .

@_Magic

Great grow, it developed beautifully :ok_hand:t3:

@Andy_420

Also super nice to look at, the area you’ve worked out

Runtz x Layer Cake

And lastly, problem lady Pineapple Kush (back in the race)

The Pineapple doesn’t look pretty, I know, but I want to pull her through after everything I’ve done for her :face_holding_back_tears:

This grow is showing me my limits once again. With 4 different plants and my still young growing knowledge, it’s only a matter of time before I run into various problems that need to be overcome. Super for the learning curve, of course, but hard to bear for a grower’s heart sometimes.

I love growing and already know how I’m going to make the next grow better and more effective :folded_hands:t3:
On the next run, I’ll put a maximum of 3 plants in the tent, and max 2 different strains. I’m running into real space issues in my little tent

Happy Sunday to you all

I’ll find my way.
It’s just my opinion on watering with various toys and the experiences I’ve had.
The Blumats were in 18 L pots for me. In a bed or pots from 50 L upwards it might be useful too.
I had those rigid hoses with it, and you can’t get the pot out without removing the carrots.
With a bit of patience and setting the drippers smaller, i.e., closing the regulators further, I probably would have found the right ratio.
But I just don’t have the patience and desire for that.
Sure, you can work with the Auto Pot. But if I have to have 50% perlite at the bottom of the pot, which steals space for soil. Personally, I think it’s more useful for mineral cultivation.
I did have a harvest, but specifically in the Flex fabric pots in the Auto Pot almost 50% less yield. And it makes a difference whether I harvest 100 g or 200 g .
In the end, even with mineral growing it doesn’t matter what the lady is standing in anyway. She even grows in just clay pebbles and perlite.
If I ever use 1 bed with 100 - 150 L of soil, the Blumat makes sense to me again. You don’t move the pot around anyway once it’s full, and then screw the rigid hoses. :joy:
These Tray2grow are indeed probably more for a living soil. In principle almost the same as Auto Pot, just with Aquavalve. Only in the tray the water seeps in, and the pot or pots don’t stand directly in the water, but by means of a mat it works more like a wick system, just across the entire area via capillary action. That way, only what the plant demands and needs gets into the pot, into the soil. Except the trays only come in a length of 115 cm, and that doesn’t fit in 90 x 90 cm.
:joy:
Now, the setup was quite expensive and still almost brand new.
Doesn’t make any sense to me!
At the end of the day, nothing beats hand watering , hehehe .
And always something different. Shouldn’t get boring after all.
So, I just smoked some self-made hash earlier. Not much , don’t even know from which plant anymore. But it hits very pleasantly.
Actually you don’t feel anything coming and bang, all of a sudden it’s there. Wow, and that lasted for a few hours now. Looks like a black hash (“Schwatte”) , but the taste isn’t in that direction at all.
It was just a little finger hash that stuck to the scissors during trimming.
Mmh @BluntForceTrauma420 , never letting a reservoir drop below half, then filling it up again. Fresh water on top of old! Doesn’t that lead to problems, or do you aerate the water or always have movement in it?
@SmartPlants I always try my best to pass on my experiences.
Always reads so easy when buying.
Those were or are just my experiences, which doesn’t mean it’s like that for others.
There are people who do well with it too.
And there are things to consider that aren’t everyone’s cup of tea either.
I just don’t want to hang a water tank under the ceiling so the pressure in the Blumat makes the water drip out.
Well, on the other hand, a pot up to 20 L also invites you to take the plant out of the tent for trimming or something. But when everything is cabled up, almost like in an ICU.
Moving it back and forth isn’t easy anymore either.
It all has a bit to do with personal preference too.
But these are also informative discussions that could serve someone in making a decision.
If in the end it just sits around, like with me. Then that wasn’t it either!
But I’ll find a use for it eventually. Maybe stick the drip carrots in the strawberry bucket next summer.
What I also didn’t understand about all this was the description that it drips when the soil gets drier, and at saturation, stop.
Meaning, if you water a bit extra. The soil is saturated. It shouldn’t drip at first, only once it gets drier again.
But why does the good wet stuff run out of the bottom of the pots after a few days then? ???
I think that having the right soil that actually absorbs and stores the water plays a role here too.
Now I’ll sneak back into the nursery and set up a few yellow sticky traps.
For the flying gnats, and this time not touching the soil .
Because I don’t want to catch my predatory mites. :joy:
All the things you have to think about, and thinking isn’t my thing.
Leave thinking to the horses, they have much bigger heads. :innocent:
No nice weather today.
Hopefully it gets cold soon so I can sift the trim, because the cold makes it so much easier.
Well then, best wishes to everyone and happy growing.
Have a nice rest of the weekend

Something new from me as well, germination is going as follows: an old seed came first, my own strain followed right behind. Well, what can I say, nothing is alive with the seeds from Ganja Farmer:face_vomiting:. Just sent them an email right away, something like this hasn’t happened to me in 30 years, I’m curious to see what they have to say about it.

So things are only working out partially for you too.
I haven’t even tried Ganja Farmer yet. So I can’t say anything about that.
But for me, it was also a few freebie things. The second run with a Wedding Cake promo free seed from RQS didn’t even swell up. Neither in soil nor in cotton wool. And so I keep waiting :joy:
I just don’t know if I should take a replacement seed now.
It’s also shit if they end up having a 14-day age difference.
I also don’t see the point in germinating 15 just to pick out the 5 best ones.
I heard about a shop in Spain where you can order the seeds directly from the breeder yourself. But then 50 at 90 cents a seed.
Then you can afford to be wasteful.
If the packs are filled with the same seeds with a label attached, it costs 10 times as much right away. But then failures like that make it expensive.
Let’s see how many of all those seeds I still have over there ---- won’t pop.
@herr_gruen , did you check if it wasn’t too wet?
Well, stupid question, you germinate in cotton wool, right.
Just annoying, especially for those who don’t have much anyway.
I’m curious if there’ll be an answer / response. I’m keeping my fingers crossed for you.
Throw another seed in quickly so the tent gets filled.
Cool, my son and his missus were here today and I cooked for them all.
The carbonara was damn delicious. A successful, lovely day.
Best regards

If you’re removing the carrot, it can’t go back in the same hole. It needs to have soil tight against carrot to work otherwise it will keep dripping constantly. As for the water I haven’t had an issue as long as I clean it between grows. If I had an outlet I could use I’d have aeration but unfortunately it’s not possible. I already have 2 power strips in the wall outlet and every port is used on them. For me having my hand watering dialed using soil monitors didn’t compare to the explosion of growth the blumats gave me. I also have the flexible hose which makes life a lot easier moving the pots for defoliation and maintenance. I look forward to seeing your results with hand watering. Everyone has their preferred way of watering so as long as it works well for you that’s what matters. I wish you a bountiful harvest.

Evening everyone,

@Pflanzenpaul yeah, great post, I’m really turned off by the Blumats, because I don’t even have the space for the system myself and your description with the intensive care unit  comes very close to it, and I also find it impractical since I MUST take my plants out because I can’t reach them from all sides.

@herr_gruen

I haven’t used Ganja Farmer so far, but I’ve never had anything like that either

Really nice stem @jhonRambow
Good luck with the rest of the harvest, great job.

Here are a few shots with the Nikon to pass the time :camera:

Ganja Runtz Auto - by the way, I’ve already successfully germinated a few from Ganja Farmer. So all of them attempted so far.

I think this one’s going to turn out really nice

And the star right now, Papaya Dragon Auto

Both the same age

Ganja Runtz Auto is significantly behind the stated schedule of 8-11 from germination.

Papaya Dragon is almost ready

Yeah, awesome pictures!
So I’m curious, because earlier I tucked the one seed from Ganja Farmer, the Permanent Marker, into wet cotton wool.
I took the free promo Wedding Cake seed out of the cotton wool today and threw it away. If by day 6 the thing hasn’t even swollen, then I say goodbye.
The others are pretty much here now. The Jamaican not quite yet, but something is knocking on the surface from below. :joy:
The Tropical Kush needed my help today. And I was right there to help her across the threshold.
Somehow the empty seed shell didn’t want to come off her, so I had to help her out. :innocent:
Now she’s standing there, reminding me of a duck’s head.

She hasn’t managed to unfold her cotyledons yet.
If the last seed doesn’t want to play along either, then I’ll work with what’s there and also leave the A. Skittlez in the pot, even if she’s already lost an extreme amount of time. Then she’ll just be a small auto.
The Mexican has stretched a lot over the last 2-3 days, so today I added a bit of fresh soil on top to bury more of the stem in soil.
Turned the dimmer to 24% in case she keeps stretching. So she doesn’t fall over when the top gets bigger, I gave her a support.

She stands very loosely in the clip, and some more soil went in after the photos.

The Sherbet Queen has a sturdy leg so far. Don’t want to overdo it with the light right now either, and hope it’s fine so they grow strong.
The Strawberry Kush was the first and fastest. That’s why she’s a bit further along.
But the plan here is already to steal a few shoots from her later on to make 2 - 3 clones for the smaller tent, and because it was her last seed.

The last Jamaican seed is very slowly joining in.

You can already see a tiny bit there. :flexed_biceps:
Now it’s only the Permanent M that I started today.
Now I noticed that there are already 6 now.
So it didn’t really have to be. On the other hand, I only have the one seed of her anyway, which invites making 1 - 2 clones from her as well.
Besides the fact that the 18 L and 25 L pots are filled with soil, I’d still have 6 x 15 L fabric bags.
The thought even crosses my mind and I ask myself the question!
Why do I even have tents in the room?
And not just plant the whole room like that directly. For night rest and strict darkness I have exterior shutters, and they’re down. No light gets in there anymore.
Theoretically, no smells can get out, since the exhaust air is transported directly outside, and by means of a ventilation grille on the room door, the air should only pull into the room, which is then sucked out again, out under the window. The smell shouldn’t actually spread against the airflow??? Pondering, pondering.
You’d have a bit more space and the lights could go on the ceiling.
Gives half a meter more height.
The beginning is always so slow, you can do very little to nothing. Then things get going.
The predatory mites I released are pretty active. Some of them went directly into the worm bin. It would be ideal if they multiply even more in the moist humus.
That way I’d always have them ready to go.
Otherwise, nothing else to report from my front, and the little ones still need a bit of time until everything gets nicer.
So time to smoke the next load so the grin doesn’t fade.
Have a good week and a bountiful harvest, wishes Paule

My ganja farmer permanent marker is giving me issues. 24hr soak followed by 2 days in a damp paper towel and none of the 3 have popped open. I also noticed they don’t give an extra seed like most of the top breeders do. Honestly don’t have high hopes for their gear after all the negative stuff I’m hearing here and on reddit.

Welcome to the club, at least now I’m not the only one having problems.

I sent them an email yesterday, got a reply today: they deleted the order, now they wanted to know the order number and which seeds they were.

Just sent out the response. Now it’s back to waiting.

Send them an email directly, then maybe they’ll realize that something is going wrong there. Maybe we’ll get replacements too.
